Luke 12:13-21- Then someone called from the crowd, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me.” 14 Jesus replied, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?”
15 Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” 16 Then he told them a story: “A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops. 17 He said to himself, ‘What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’ 18 Then he said, ‘I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.
19 And I’ll sit back and say to myself, “My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’ 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’ 21 “Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”
The Judaic law was very clear when it came to the estate of a father. This law said that the eldest son got two-thirds of the estate and the younger son got one third unless there were several and in this case this third was divided among all of them. So there was really no question about which brother got what.
One's heart is more important than what he possess.
Greed had caused this man to loose sight of what was important. Not riches in earthly things, but rich in a relationship with God. Anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich in God, is in for a great awakening.
Warning against greed in vs#15 - Jesus turned from the man to the crowd that day and warned, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions!”
1 Timothy 6:9-10 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
Jesus is not speaking against wealth, He is speaking against greed! Do not get it twisted! A man's life does not consist of how much stuff he can get, but his or her relationship with God. Stuff will be left here one earth once we die. What will be have gained for an eternal purpose if all we possessed in life was stuff that was left one earth?
Too much focus is on the treasures of the world today, but God warns against this. Let's listen in Matthew 6:19-21 - "Don't store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20-Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21-For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Proverbs 28:6 - Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.
God is the only one who can address this rich man about greed because He has rejected all others who have attempted to speak to Him. God has a way like no one else! He knows exactly what it takes to get our attention and He will do just that!
Are You Storing Up For Now Or For Eternity? Nothing on earth is eternal. It will all one day fade away!
God bless and do tell the Lord thank you.
I love you all with the love of Christ!
