Proverbs 13:20 -Instructions For Wise Living

Proverbs 13:20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

As people of God, we MUST have a teachable spirit. Once you reject godly instructions and godly wisdom, you stop growing. There is no wisdom for wise living in and of ourselves. If we believe it to be so, we are only fooling ourselves and  the bible calls us a "fool".

Wisdom from wise living only comes from God. Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction.

In our text we are exhorted to walk with the wise in order to become wise. If we choose not to walk with the wise and with with the unwise who God calls "fools", we will suffer harm. In other words, you will regret your unwise choices.

Walk with the sort of people God describes as “wise” and it will help you become a better Christian. Who are the wise in God? Let's listen to the description of one in Proverbs 1:5 - 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels. Where does this wisdom and counsel comes from? God, His Word and the Holy Spirit.

Do you want to increase in wisdom? Walk with the wise. Walk with those who walk with the Lord. Proverbs 14:16 - A wise [man] feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.  Proverbs 17:24 - Wisdom [is] before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool [are] in the ends of the earth.

Proverbs 9:6 -Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding. In other words, depart from a "fool" for he or she is unwise and without the wisdom of God. They will not receive you nor hear what you have to say.

Proverbs 14:7-9 - Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge. 8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit. 9 Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour.

Proverbs 10:14 - Wise [men] lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish [is] near destruction. Proverbs 10:13 - In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod [is] for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Proverbs 15:7 - The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish [doeth] not so.

Do you want to increase in foolishness? Walk with fools. Proverbs 29:11 - A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise [man] keepeth it in till afterwards. Proverbs 18:2 - A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself. Proverbs 10:23 - [It is] as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

Proverbs 18:7 - A fool's mouth [is] his destruction, and his lips [are] the snare of his soul.

Proverbs 18:6 - A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.

Proverbs 17:25 - A foolish son [is] a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

God has given us a warning about wise and foolish companionship because He love us and does not want us to be deceived into unwise living and companionships by fools.

Ecclesiastes 7:9 - Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 -Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter; Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Proverbs 21:20 - [There is] treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.

Where does wisdom originate? In the fear of the Lord. God opens men eyes, ears, and hearts to truth and wisdom.  God opens our eyes to His word. God shows us His secrets when we walk in His wisdom.  Wisdom cannot be found anywhere in the universe, but in the fear of God for He alone is Wisdom.

Proverbs 3:35 - The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
Where do you stand today? Among the wise or the fools? Who are you walking with? The wise or fools?

How are you walking on today? As one with wisdom or as a fool? A wise man knows that true wisdom is about God and not about me. A fool is wise in his own eyes and daily utters these words to himself and others-"look at me"! A wise man on the other hand utter these words "look at God"! Which one are you? Wise or foolish?
