1 Samuel 30:6 - And David was greatly distressed:for the people spoke of stoning him because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters:but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
Discouragement-=to be disheartened, to be cast or broken down or to lose heart. A feeling of hoplessness and helplessness.
Discouragement passes all our paths. The opportunity to be discouraged passes us daily.
When faced with discouragement, we have a choice to either feed into or to put it to death by encouraging ourselves in the Word of God.
In this text, David was living among his enemies. He went to battle with them against his own people Israel, but they did not trust Him and sent him back to his city. David returned to his city "Ziklag" that the Philistine's had given him.
After returning to Ziklag with his soldiers who had gone with him, to their surprise, discouragement was waiting them. David finds his city burned, his wives and children along with the wives and children of his solders had all been carried off by the Amalekites.
The bible says that David and his men wept bitter tears until they had no more power to weep. For David it was even worse because he is now being blamed for this disaster by his grieving soldiers who spoke of stoning him.
David was in a place that we call a "mess". Trouble was in his camp. What did he do? Did he seek David's best way to handle the situation? Did he seek the advise of his men? No, he went directly to God. Scripture declares that David "encourage" himself in the Lord.
David knew that in the time of trouble of need, God is the only true source of help. David had a covenant with God, he had a personal relationship with God, therefore, he knew that this was a situation that only God could handle and he took it directly to God.
Having seeked God for a solution, David found the answer he needed in solving his problem. God told him to "pursue his enemies and he shall recover all". That David did!
Where do you turn to when discouragement comes your way? is it to friends, family members, your cell phone, drugs, alcohol, promiscuity, shopping, eating, despair and defeat, crying, your frat brothers or soroity sisters? Where or who do you turn to for help in your time of discouragement?
When discouragement comes our way, we must look like a fool before people and stand on the Word of God. Remember, the Gospel is foolish to those that are perishing. We know the truth, therefore, we must seek God who is our help in the time of trouble.
God's word assures us of his protection throughout scripture. Psalm 34:19, "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. Isaiah 43:2 "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."
Discouragement is not from God, it is from our adversary, our enemy called satan, the devil. It is he that brings discouragement.
One day the satan had a garage sale. The most warped and bent out of shape tool was to be sold for the highest price. The customers asked "why is this tool so much more expensive than the others and it is all beat up and worn out"? Satan replied with these words "this is the one I use the most. It is called discouragement." That is why it cost more than the others.
God wants us to be encouraged and He has given us the means by which we can do just that. His Word, prayer and other believers of the household of faith.
God’s word declares that God changes not, He is the same today, yesterday and forever.
Remember, you have all the necessary tools to defeat "discouragement". Scripture declares that the just shall live by faith. It was by faith the the saints of old earned a good reputation.
Feeling discouraged? Encourage yourself in the Lord.
God bless and do tell the Lord thank you for victory belongs to all those whose hope is in Him.
I love you all.
