1 John 2:15-17 - Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
The command on today is to "love not the world". Why? Because no man can serve 2 masters at the same time. If you love the world, the love of God is not in you. Love for the world pushes out the love for God and likewise, your love for God pushes out the love for the world.
The World's view is contrary to God's view. The world says eat, drink and be merry, never giving any though to your soul or eternal destination. God says to "repent and turn away from sin and all its's pleasures and turn to me so that you may live".
In this text, the "world" is an enemy which is opposed to God. Satan is described as the "prince of the world". His goal is to distort the truth and deceive the world into believing his lies as truth.
The same temptation that satan used in the garden of Eden to our first mother, Eve, He is still using today. He deceived her into eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil by these same three tools. (1) lust of the flesh, (2) lust of the eyes, (3) pride of life. These are the gifts that satan has made available to mankind throughout the world.
God offers us everlasting love, forgiveness of sins through the shed blood of His Son Jesus Christ, Redemption, hope, salvation, redemption, righteousness, divine wisdom, peace that surpasses understanding, joy unspeakable and on and on. But most of all, He offers us everlasting life with Him in heaven.
What is your plan in life? What is your goal? Is it to continue to seek the world and all it's pleasures that are temporary? The world pleasures satisfies only for a moment. You may succeed in getting it today and tomorrow you will need to be full of it again. It is a hopeless venture that will only leave you empty, helpless and never satisfy.
If you do not believe me, look at the world today. People everywhere have more things, money, possessions, titles, degrees and more riches than they have ever had and they are more miserable than they have ever been. Why? Things and people can not satisfy us, only God can.
As believers, our citizenship is in heaven. Earth is temporary. It is a place of preparation for eternity.
It is very important that we believe and take serious the words that God is speaking today. We are given the reason why we should not love the world over God in this text. Let's listen to verse #17-And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
The world and all it's lust are passing away. In other words, it is a sinking ship. Matthew 6:19-21- Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 20-But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: 21-For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
To set your heart and mind on things of this world is only asking for heartache, misery and pain now and in eternity.
Not only is the world passing away, but all the lust of it too. If the world and all it's pleasure is your desire, the world will pass away and take you with it. You may not loose your treasures and pleasures,, but you will loose your life.
Scripture declares on today that the world passes away and the lust of it.
Do not love the world and all it's pleasures for they are all temporary.
God bless and I love you all.
