Matthew 26:1-5- When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples,2 ‘As you know, the Passover is two days away – and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.’
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 ‘But not during the festival,’ they said, ‘or there may be a riot among the people.’
Jesus is nearing the end of His ministry and His life. The purpose in which he came to earth to die for the sins of the world is now at hand. The plot to kill Him is set in motion.
The hatred against Jesus is described this way in John 1:11- John said about Jesus these words "he came unto His own and His own and His own received Him not".
Those profound words spoken by John now proves to be true then and still yet today in the hearts of many.
The hatred towards Jesus from the elders and high priest has now moved from their hearts to the physical act of their hands in an indirect way.
These leaders had been deceived into believing that they were the final authoritative powers and that they had the right to not only plot the murder of Jesus, but to make sure it was acted out.
These leaders felt the need to get rid of Jesus out of fear of the people believing that He was the Son of God by the many signs and wonders He was performing.
Let's listen to where envy, jealousy and hate has taken these so called leaders in John 11:47-49 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. ‘What are we accomplishing?’ they asked. ‘Here is this man performing many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.’49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, ‘You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.’
Did you hear those fearful words being spoken by these evil doers in vs#47b? Let's listen-"this man is performing many signs"! That was the problem! Proof as to who Jesus was and is was a threat to them.
Those plotting to kill Jesus were church folks.
The Pharisees, the religious leaders, knew that God had promised to send the Messiah. But sadly, they did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah. All they could see was that if people started believing in Jesus, the people would no longer follow them. Out of fear of loosing power, prestige and wealth, they decided to kill Jesus instead.
These leaders showed and proved the depth of where envy, jealousy and hate can take a person in their heart.
The hunt for Jesus to take His life was now ongoing.
We see in this text how the religious leaders responded to Jesus.
What is your response to Jesus on today? Have you received Him or rejected Him?
Are you willing to receive Him? Or, are you like the religious leaders who had already purposed in thier heart that He is not who He says He is?
Do you have a plot against Jesus? Ponder this question today in your heart.
