Exodus 20:12-"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Honor=esteem and value as precious.
We are living in a time where disobedience, disrespect and rebellion towards parents is at a great high.
Many homes and families and are in turmoil because there are many children who refuse to honor and obey their parent's authority as God commands them to.
The need for God's Word in the home is greater now than ever. It is in the Word of God where the solutions to life's issues and problems are found.
Regardless of what the world says or what everyone else is doing, God commands children to "honor" (respect) their parents, to see their parents as people of value in their lives.
The benefit of honoring your father and mother by respecting their position as parents, loving and valuing them, submitting to their authority and accepting and obeying their discipline will brings about the possibility of long life on earth for you young people.
Eventhough this particular text deals with children obeying parents, it also speaks to us as parents. We as parents must live as examples before our children. We should not be saying one thing and doing another and expect our children to respect and honor us. It won't happen!
As parents, yes, we are the authority in the home. What we must keep in mind as parents is that it is very difficult for our children to respect us if we ourselves are not living a life worthy of honor.
When our children know that we really love and care about them and their well being, they tend to respect us and respond to us with love also.
Here are a few warnings for us as parents. Colossians 3:21-Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Ephesians 6:4-Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
We earn respect from our children by being respectful in our actions towards them and by speaking words of love and kindness to them.
Jesus himself declares these words in Jeremiah 31:3-The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee.
The reason children should and "must" obey their parents is because God commands it, it is the right thing to do and most of all, it pleases God.
In order for children to learn how to respect and obey parents, and for parents to parent with love and authority, we all need God's help. We can not do it without Him. Jesus says “apart from me you can do nothing”.
Life can be much better for those young people who honor their parents. They would avoid many of the world's traps and pitfalls if they do.
Children obeying parents is the way that God designed the relationship to be.
If we obey our earthly parents, there is a great possibility that we will honor, respect and obey our Heavenly Father too.
Children, obey your parents for this is right in the eyes of God.
