Luke 1:5-7 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
The name Elizabeth (greek) is derived from the Hebrew name Elisheba, which means Oath of God or God is satisfaction.
Luke, the writer of this text is known throughout the new testament as a Physician.
Elizabeth is described in the book of Luke as the wife of Zechariah, the daughter of the daughters of Aaron, a woman who was righteous int he sight of God and one who observed all the Lord commands and decrees blamelessly.
Elizabeth was also described as a barren woman who was chosen by God at a very old age to become the mother of the great Prophet, "John" the Baptist.
God sent an angel to Elizabeth husband, Zechariah while he was on duty as a "Priest" in the temple. The angel revealed to him that his wife Elizabeth will bear him a son and that Zechariah should call him "John" for he would be a child that will bring him and Elizabeth joy and delight and will cause many to rejoice. This child will be "great" in the sight of the Lord.
God granted Elizabeth favor by not only giving her a child in her old age, but also by giving her a son who would prepare the way (hearts of the people) for the earthly ministry that Christ was coming to begin.
Elizabeth is also recorded in scripture as being the "cousin" of Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ.
When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, she was visited by her cousin Mary, and the baby, "John" leaped in her womb and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and in a loud voice she shouted "“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”
When the news broke about Elizabeth pregnancy with John throughout the town, her neighbors and relatives showed her great mercy and they shared her joy.
Who was Elizabeth? A daughter of the daughters of Aaron, the wife of Zechariah, a godly woman who observed God's commands and laws, a barren woman who became pregnant in her old age and bare a son, a cousin of Jesus' mother, Mary and the mother of "John" the Baptist who was preordained and prophesied to be the "Great Prophet" of God that would prepare the way for Christ earthly ministry.
Elizabeth was some kind of a woman! God fearing, righteous, godly wife and mother.
Elizabeth was somebody in the eyes of God almighty! She fulfilled her purpose in which she came to earth for.
Elizabeth, an example of the power of God to women all around the world who could trust God in spite of and believe.
