Matthew 2:18-23-But when Herod was dead, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child’s life are dead.”
21 And he rose, took the young Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Nevertheless, being warned by God in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
God in His "infinite" wisdom, sends an angel to Joseph in a dream while he slept in Egypt.
The message from God to Joseph through the angel was "arise, take the young child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel for Herod, who sought to kill Jesus is now dead."
God is a God of divine providence and order. He sees, knows and directs all of the affairs of the world and is in control of all things.
Nothing is hidden from Him. God's presence is everywhere. Scripture declares in Hebrews 4:13-Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Psalm 139:12 even the darkness is not dark to You, but the night shines as the day, for the darkness is like light to You.
Herod, his thoughts, ideas, the intent of his heart, his person, his death, was all known to God. God knew his desire to have Jesus killed prior to his plot and prior to his plot being manifested in the slaughter of innocent male children 2 years old and younger.
God knows all of us and everything about us too, including our thoughts, ways and the intent of our hearts too.
God is the maker and creator of all people and all things. Colossians 1:16-For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.
As I stated in a previous lesson, Herod had one plan, but God had another. We see who won right? There is no power greater than the power of the "Sovereign" God of the universe.
Being obedient to the angel of the Lord, Joseph arose and took Jesus and Mary to the land of Israel.
After arriving in Israel and having heard that Herod was dead and his son, Archelaus was seated on his father's throne, Joseph became afraid.
Having once again being warned by an angel of the Lord, Joseph, Mary and Jesus enters into a city of Galilee called Nazareth and had taken up residence there for what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled. "He shall be called a Nazarene.
From the beginning of this text to this point, we see how God divinely protected Jesus. We also see how God used Joseph and Joseph obedience to God and what was spoken to him by God through the angel of the Lord.
Joseph shows us many things, but I will mention a few. (1) Salvation is beneficial in many ways. Because Joseph was a "just man" , one who had been deemed "righteous" in the eyes of God and a man who had a personal relationship with God, he was able to hear God through what the angel of the Lord spoke to his spirit man. (2) Joseph was obedient to the what the Lord had spoken to him through His angel. Joseph obeyed every time the angel appeared to him.
When we obey God and what he tells us to do, there is no doubt that there would be 'GREAT" fruit in our lives and evidence of God's presence with us.
Because of Joseph's obedience to God's divine order, Jesus life was spared and God's will and purpose for Christ coming to earth to die for the sins of man was fulfill.
To all the "herods" out there, God knows who you are and He will deal with you justly.
Divine order, divine providence, divine protection, obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit are all benefits of salvation. These are a few of the things that God provides for us as His people.
People of God, wherever you may find yourself at on today, whatever difficult or impossible situation, circumstance or hard place you may be right now, God has a way of escape for you. Get in the Word of God, pray and seek the Father's face for He too will divinely direct your path.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, and He will not permit you to be tempted above what you can endure, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
