Luke 19:1-10 Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. 2 A man was there named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. 3 He tried to see who Jesus was, but was not able from the crowd, because he was little in stature.4 So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was to pass that way.
5 When Jesus came to the vicinity, He looked up and saw him, and said to him,“Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house today.”6 So he hurried and came down, and received Him joyfully.
7 When they saw it, they all murmured, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, I give half of my possessions to the poor. And if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I will repay him four times as much.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
Zacchaeus, a rich tax collector who is described as a short man, climbed a sycamore so that he may get a good look at Jesus as He was passing by. Being short, he was unable to see Jesus through the crowd.
As Jesus pass by the tree where he was hiding and Jesus being the Sovereign God, He knew that Zacchaeus was up in that tree. He looked up at him and to his surprise, Jesus commanded him to come down quickly for Jesus said to him, "I must stay at your house today".
Happy to be recognized by Jesus, Zacchaeus was full of joy.
Of course the naysayers did not agree as they grumbled about Jesus going to the home of one who they considered to be a sinner.
It is Jesus who declares the purpose of His earthly mission in Mark 2:17-"It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
Zacchaeus felt a need to explain to Jesus how he had been living his life, not knowing that Jesus knows all about us. He even knew His name because He called him by name down from the sycamore tree that day.
As Jesus did that day when He passed through Samaria and met the women at the well, the same He did here for Zacchaeus in bringing salvation to His house that day.
Jesus call to Zacchaeus that day was a personal invitation from the God of Heaven in the flesh that day.
Jesus called him by name. Zacchaeus heard the call and he responded to it with obedience.
Jesus knew that Zacchaeus was provided for in the natural with everything that he had needed, but that he was lacking the greatest richest of all and that was "salvation". Therefore, Jesus said to Him, "today, salvation has come to this house.
Oh, what an encounter! An opportunity like no other. An opportunity to sit and talk with the Savior of the World, God Almighty.
My mind cannot even grasp this thought, but I feel the presence of the Holy Spirit as I attempt to place myself at the scene of this great miracle as I try to imagine this scene in my finite mind.
Oh, the joy I feel in my soul as the tears flows when I ponder on the memories of my personal encounter with Jesus when He called my name in the dark of the night at the edge of the woods behind my house in April 1998 as I stood there feeling hopeless and helpless with no where to turn too.
In the midst of all that pain, suffering, agony, hurt, anger and sadness, I was overcome with the joy of the presence of the Holy Spirit who comforted me as I welcomed Him into the home of my heart that night.
Jesus called my name April 1998 and I responded to that divine call. A call out of the world and into a life with Christ that forever changed who I was. I am no longer the same. Like Zacchaeus, God knew my name and He called me to salvation too.
