Joshua 1:1-9 I’ve commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the Lord your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
This text is a personal message from God to Joshua. It is clear and specific.
The call in this text is to "be of good courage" and be not afraid for the Lord our God is with you. This is a commandment from the Lord.
God here calls Joshua, Moses former assistant, to lead His people to the promise land.
Moses is now dead and God has placed Joshua in the position to lead His people into the land of promise that He promised to give to the seed of Abraham.
The command from God to Joshua is to be courageous, not based on Joshua's strength or abilities but on the assurance of God's presence with Him.
In other words, this call from God to Joshua to be not afraid, but encouraged is not done apart from God but with God.
It is God who equips us for the journey, in the journey and along the journey.
Yes, Joshua was there with Moses when they started out but Joshua role then is not the same as it is now. Then he was the assistant leader, now he is called by God to be the leader.
Of course, this new responsibility has caused him to fear I am sure, but God has commanded him not to fear for He promise that He will be with Joshua wherever he goes.
God is saying to Joshua, I have called you to this task, I am the one that is sending you and I am the One that will be with you, therefore, you have no need to worry or fear for I the Lord your God who has all power is with you.
Joshua is about to enter a period of “testing of his faith” but He has a promise of God’s ever presence in themidst of it.
Oh, what a promise! The promise of God's ever presence in a time of fear and uncertainty. He knows what God promises, but he too is human and I am certain that there was some thoughts of fear for I believe that is why God said to him “fear not, but be of good courage” for I am with you.
Have you ever been there before? Has God ever given you a task to do and it appeared to be a mountain too high to climb? Have you ever been there before? I must admit that I have been there many times, but God saw me through too.
If God calls you to a task, He will equip you for it and He will be with you in it and through it to give you His divine wisdom and His divine direction to carry it out.
To be courageous and not fearful requires Faith in God and His Word, it requires us to keep our focus on God and not on what we see. It also requires determination, prayer and meditation on God's Word.
God promises victory for His people, but of course, not without God leading us to that victory.
There is work in the Kingdom of God on earth that God is calling us to do. Now is the time to hear from God and trust Him to lead us and guide us in getting it done.
If we look throughout the world today we will see that indeed the harvest is plentiful, but the labors are few.
God is calling the laborer to the vineyard for there is much work that is still unfinished. There is more ground to cover and more battles to be won.
In our obedience to doing that which God has called us to do, the command on today is to “fear not, but be encouraged” in that which God has assigned to our hands.
Remember that the Lord God promises to be with us where ever we go. Let's put feet to our faith and get moving in winning souls for the Lord.
The Lord gave Joshua encouragementand assurance of a guaranteed victory when he said in vs#5 Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.
God informs Joshua of the promise He made with Abraham concerning Abraham’s seed, to whom Joshua is not a descendent of.
Let’s listen to God’s promise that He made to Abraham in vs#6-8 “Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law[b] he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.”
Now God here give specific instructions on how to be victorious in possessing the land of promise. (1) be strong and courageous (2) be careful to do everything that you have learned from Moses (3) never stop reading the book of the law (word of God) he gave you (4) meditate (think about what it says) on that Word day and night (5) obey it complete and you and Israel will possess the land. GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!!!!
God has given us a battle plan in this text. One that will guarantee victory over the enemy.
When we have followed God’s instructions laid out in His Word for victory we can, with His assurance and confidence do what God said in vs#9-be strong and brave and not fearful or discouraged because we know that the Lord our God promises to be there to help us wherever we go.
God has given all believers His Holy Spirit on the inside of us as evidence of His ever presence with us.
I encourage you all on today to be bold and courageous as you stand up for the Gospel truth in this sinful, dying world in which we live for the Lord our God is with us.
God has given you a voice to proclaim His Word, so do it with power and authority for the Lord your God is in you.
Remember as you venture out on today to do the Lord’s work that He is with you, therefore be not afraid but be of good cheer for the Lord promises that there will be victory when the battle is over.
God bless you and do tell the Lord thank you for it is in Him where we find the courage, strength and ability to do that which He has called us to do.
