Psalm 118:5-6 I called upon the Lord from my distress; the Lord answered me and set me in an open place. 6 The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can people do to me?
The Psalmist, David was in great distress when he prayed this heart felt prayer unto the Lord.
Because David called upon the Lord in prayer when he was not in distress, it was not hard for him to call upon him when he found himself in distress.
David knew where to go for the help he needed, he knew where to find peace in the midst of his storm, he knew where to find shelter and he knew that God was the only one he could trust in this situation, he knew that God was the only one able to fight the battles against his enemies and that God would do it, he knew that God would meet him at that place of prayer once he got there.
Therefore, because of David's personal prayer life and personal relationship with God he was able to boldly confess that "the Lord was on his side and he will not fear man or what he can do to him".
When the mass army of enemies came against God's people in 2 Chronicles, King Jehoshaphat called the entire nation to a fast and time of corporate prayer and the King seek the Lord with these words in vs#5-10
And Jehoshaphat stood in the midst of the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the Lord before the new courtyard, 6 and he said:“O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in the heavens? And do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations? In Your hand are strength and might, and there is no one who can oppose You.
7 Did You not, our God, drive out those who lived in this land before Your people Israel, and You gave it perpetually to the descendants of Abraham, who was in covenant love with You. 8 And they have dwelled in it and have built in it for You a sanctuary for Your name saying, 9 ‘If disaster comes upon us, the sword, or judgment, or pestilence, or famine, then we will stand before this temple and before You because Your name is in this temple. And we will cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear and deliver.
Vs # 17- God said to His people "You will not need to fight this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you. O Judah and Jerusalem! Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you."
