Mark 6:5-He could not do any miracles there, except that He laid hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He was amazed of their unbelief.
Unbelief- the withholding of belief; disbelief of divine revelation; disbelief of the truth of the Gospel, rejection of Christ as the Savior of men, and of the doctrines He taught; distrust of God's promises and faithfulness.
Throughout scripture we are given continual evidence of Jesus as the Messiah and throughout scripture we continually see how that truth is rejected over and over again by many.
In John 1:1 we are told that Jesus came to His own people, and even they received Him not.
Unbelief has caused many hearts to harden and many to doubt and reject Christ. We see this in Mark 14:61-Again the high priest asked Him, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?
Luke 22:66-67-When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him away to their council, saying, 67 “Are You the Christ? Tell us!” He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe.
Believe it or not, but the rejection of Christ is more alive today than ever. Many have and are still doubting his Word, doubting that He was sent by God to die and shed His blood as an atonement for the sins of humanity.
Today, the "NO VACANCY" sign hangs high and wide in the hearts of many who have chosen to allow doubt and unbelief to be the rule of the day in their hearts instead of faith and belief in the one who came to save them.
In this text on today, Jesus dealt with unbelief among those who had walked with Him and talked with Him, those who had seen Him perform one miracle after another and yet still choose to live in unbelief as the truth of God's Word stood before them daily.
Jesus went to His hometown of Nazareth along with His disciples. As was His custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath to teach. Having profoundly spoken the Word of God in the hearing of those that were there, having being astonished by what they heard Jesus spoke and the power and authority in which He spoke it and having proclaimed with their own mouth the many miracles they had seen worked by His hands, they still refuse to believe. Instead, they rejected Him and God’s Word by denying Him in their associating Him with his earthly family and took offense at Him.
WOW! A mixture of jealousy, doubt, envy and unbelief. The people that should have believed (those in the church with Him that day) doubted. WOW!
What those in the synagogue that day did not realized is the fact that they missed the greatest opportunity ever. They missed the opportunity to truly open their clogged ears and blinded eyes and hear from God Himself.
Many that day, missed the opportunity to personally be touched by the hands of God Himself, they missed an opportunity to be healed spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically all because of unbelief.
Unbelief is still blocking the mind's view of many in the world today. Many are daily walking around with feelings of hurt, abandonment, rejection, abuse, oppression, sickness, afflictions, defeat and on and on all because they have chosen NOT to believe that Jesus is the Son Of God and that He is able to fix the problems in their lives if they could only trust and believe in Him.
Jesus is speaking the same “WORDS” to the wounded and brokenhearted in the world today that He spoke 2k years ago to those in the synagogue today.
Let's listen again to vs# 5-6 5 He could not do any miracles there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He was amazed because of their unbelief.
In other words, many were left in their sick condition (MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY) because of unbelief. Jesus said "He could not do much work there because of the people's unbelief".
The response from Jesus to the unbelief of the people then and now in the world today is "AMAZEMENT." He is amazed at the depth of the people's unbelief.
Here is Jesus message to those that would turn unbelief into faith on today. Let's listen to Luke 4:18-The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed;
Psalm 147:3- He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
Having heard what you just read, where do you now stand? In faith and belief in Christ or do you choose to remain in "UNBELIEF"?
Where are you on today concerning faith in Christ?
One thing for sure, scripture declares in Hebrews 11:6-And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Man can continue to do all the good works he wants to in the earth, but apart from Christ and faith in Him and His Gospel, your labor is in vain.
Works and good deeds will not get us to heaven. If we could work our way into heaven, there would have been no need for Christ to come to earth, shed His blood and die. THINK ABOUT IT!! Be not deceived, God is not mocked!
Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, 9 not of works, so that no one should boast.
Doubt and unbelief in God’s Son is a one way ticket to separation from God now and in eternity.
John 15:5-I am the vine, you are the branches. He who remains in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit. For without Me you can do nothing.
What miracles are you missing out on today that you desperately stand in need of and is unable to receive because of your unbelief? What is it?
What agony, torment, pain, suffering, sickness, afflictions are you still dealing with on today all because of unbelief? Suffering that can be taken away by Jesus through faith in Him.
No, God may not change your situation, but He can change your mindset concerning your situation.
Are you missing out on an opportunity to be personally touched by Jesus because of unbelief?
Is your heart hardened against the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Are you still blaming God for what is wrong in your life? Have you even sat down and think for a moment that it may be "UNBELIEF" that is causing you all your problems?
If doubt has set in your heart and lead you to a place of unbelief in Christ, I pray that you would cry out to God on today and ask Him into your heart. Repent, confess your sins and God is willing to forgive you.
1 John 1:9- If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
No man knows the day nor the hour when his or her last breath will be drawn. Do not let your last breath catch you with a heart of "UNBELIEF."
I pray that you would cry out to God like the father of a son who needed to his son healed by Jesus. In his desperate need of seeing His son healed, the father spoke these words to Jesus in Mark 9:24- "Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief"!
A missed opportunity all because of unbelief! Is this where you find yourself on today? I pray not!
You can be healed and made whole through faith in Christ Jesus if you would only believe for scripture declares that all things are possible to them that believe.
God bless and do tell the Lord thank you for another opportunity to turn your unbelief into belief in Him on today.
Thank Him that you did not die last night in your state of unbelief, but that He showed you mercy by keeping you alive and giving you another opportunity to get it right with Him on today.
