James 1:8 A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.
The Greek word translated “double-minded” is dipsuchos, dis meaning “twice,” and puche meaning "mind."
In other words, a double minded person is aperson with two minds. A mind that is constantly wavering, undecided and unstable.
The Apostle James is writing to The 12 tribes that were scattered abroad due to persecution of the church.
He wants to remind the believers of the importance of being singled minded with Christ.
One who is double minded has his or her loyal divided between God and the world and they are unstable in everything they do.
As Christians, we are to be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because we know that in God our labor is not in vain.
Jesus clearly states in Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other.
Many people want to be right with God while also being right with the world. It's impossible!
If you're right with God, then you'll be wrong with the world. If you're right with the world, then you'll be wrong with God. This is what it means to be double-minded, that is, trying to be right with both God and the world at the same time.
James 4:4-Friendship with the world means enmity with God. Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world is not only unstable in mind, but is also an enemy of God.
You can only serve one Master! A double-minded person foolishly THINKS they can serve both God and money, or God and the world, or God and the Devil, or God and self. It is impossible!
James 1:5-7 –If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and without criticism, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, without wavering. For he who wavers is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed with the wind. 7 Let not that man think that he will receive anything from the Lord.
James 4:8-Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
We all need divine wisdom so that we are able to discern what is of God and what is of the world or satan himself. How do we get God's divine wisdom? The Word of God is the vehicle He uses to give it to us.
Proverbs 9:10-The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
True wisdom cannot be found apart from God.
God and the things of this world are of opposite natures, therefore, it is impossible to love either one completely without hating the other.
Those who try to love both God and the things of this world will become unstable in all their ways. God is a jealous God and will not accept a service that is divided with Satan.
The cure for double mindedness is to simply believe that what God said in His Word is true. His Word is infallible and it will not return to Him void, but will accomplish that which He sends it to do.
God is not a God who will compromise HIs Word and He is certainly not a double minded God.
As people of God, God does not want us to be double minded people either. Either we take Him at His word or we don't.
Apostle Paul reminds us of this one thing in Hebrews 11:6-And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him
If we want God to look upon us favourably, we need to live as He would have us to live with singleness of heart that believes, obeys and stands firm upon His truth that is found in His bible.
Let us make sure that we believe that the Bible is the infallible, inerrant, and unchanging Word of God. Upon that premise, let us learn what God says in His Book and allow Him to implant Biblical convictions in our hearts. (BTW – the Holy Spirit teaches only one truth concerning Bible truths.)
As God’s people, let us joyfully determine that we are not going to doubt His truths, His doctrines, and His principles; but, with singleness of heart and mind and unwavering in our faith, we will stand upon what He teaches in His Holy Word.
The symptoms of a doubled minded man is easily identified. He or she is unable to pray in faith because of doubt, they do not fear God, even though scripture declares that he fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
The double minded man or woman are constaly battling in their minds between their love for God and their love for the things of this world. They are unsettled in their faith because there is not a total commitment to God, but a sharing of commitment to God and other things or people.
If you are double minded, I urge you to surrender yourself to God on today for He alone is where true stability of the mind is found.
God has provided us a way of escape from doubled mindedness. It is up to us to accept or reject what He offers to us. Regardless of our choice, we are without excuse because God has made His will known to man through His Word and through creation.
God has provided several means for us to access His wisdom. I will name a few. Prayer, the Word of God and through the leading of HIs Holy Spirit. We have our Pastors, Sunday School teachers, bible study teachers and other Christians who are able and willing to lead us to God’s Word and show us God's wisdom that is written therein.
Are you double minded and in need of the Lord's wisdom? All you have to do is ask and not doubt and God will freely give it to you.
