Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Conform- to fashion or shape one thing to be like another. ·
Transform- to change into another form; to be transformed into something different.
World- System of evil which opposes God. A system that deliberately assaults Christian values and Christian standards.
Conformity speaks of character and behavior. Believers are not to conform to the ways of this world but be conformed and transformed into the image of Christ.
God commanded Israel to practice NOT, nor imitate the practices of their surrounding nations. They were God's people, therefore, their character and behavior MUST exemplify who they belonged to and not who they are surrounded by.
To be conformed to Christ means to be united with Him as one in His death and His resurrection.
There are all kinds of pressure in the world today that is trying to make all of us a product of it. The danger of conformity is it leads one to do what they know is wrong and it never tells you how far it will take you nor of the painful consequences that comes along with it.
The good news on today is that we have "choice." We can be like Israel was and conform to the world and those around us and suffer the consequences or we can hold true to who we claim to be by faith in Christ Jesus. The choice is ours and the blame is ours, not God!!
The command of this day is to be not conformed but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. How is our mind renewed? Glad you asked because God always leads us to the help me need when we need it.
We are conformed to the likeness of Christ by spirit lead thinking. Romans 10:17-Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
Transformation to the likeness of Christ happens through the Word of God that is written in His bible. That is why it is important for us to daily study the Word of God so that our minds may be conformed to it and not of the things of this world that is daily perishing.
Believe it or not, but when all the pleasures of this world is over the only question that we all will have to answer is will where will our souls spend eternity? Will it be in peace with God because we chose to conform to His likeness or will it be in torment because of our conformity to the things of this world? Which will it be for us? Is the risk worth it?
1 Timothy 4:7-8 Don’t waste time arguing over foolish ideas and silly myths and legends. Spend your time and energy in the exercise of keeping spiritually fit. 8 Bodily exercise is all right, but spiritual exercise is much more important and is a tonic for all you do. So exercise yourself spiritually, and practice being a better Christian because that will help you not only now in this life, but in the next life too.
We cannot be a Christian by conforming to Christian codes of conduct. No, it is only by the working of God's Holy Spirit within us that we are transformed from within by faith in the atonement that was made for our sins at Calvary by Christ Jesus.
Galatians 5:16-let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.
1 John 4:4-6 Children, you belong to God, and you have defeated these enemies. God’s Spirit[a] is in you and is more powerful than the one that is in the world. 5 These enemies belong to this world, and the world listens to them, because they speak its language. 6 We belong to God, and everyone who knows God will listen to us. But the people who don’t know God won’t listen to us. That is how we can tell the Spirit that speaks the truth from the one that tells lies.
1 Corinthians 10:13-3 No temptation[a] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[b] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[c] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
The call from heaven to earth today is to be transformed and not conformed.
If you have truly been born again and is daily being conformed into the likeness of Christ, your character, behavior and attitude will show such. The same applies to being daily conformed to the likeness of the world. It too will be proven through your character, behavior and attitude.
If you have been conformed to the world and want to be transformed by the renewing of your mind, it starts with believing what is written in God's word. (2)Then, make a decision that you will allow the Holy Spirit to work in and through you to help you resist the temptation of conformity to the world. No, you cannot do it in your own strength, you need God's help. (3) make a conscious decision to focus our minds on the things of God. The world and all it's pleasure, the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life is all temporary and soon to fade away.
Scripture puts it like this in Colossians 3:1-2- “Seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
2 Corinthians 4:18-So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
The world’s ways and the world’s values, are not God’s ways and values. Stand firm on what you know to be true in God's Word.
When our minds have truly been transformed into the likeness of Christ, there is evidence that the perfect will of God for our lives is not only lived out before the world to see, but pleasing in the eyes of God also.
It is time for Christians to dare to be different. To stand firm and hold true to the Gospel we confess and the God we claim to love.
To whom do you follow? The Word or the world?
