Job 14:5 Our time on earth is brief; the number of our days is already decided by you.
Every man has been allotted a number of days here on earth.
As much as we would like to believe and convince ourselves that we are here to stay, the bible is contrary to that thought or idea.
Scripture declares that the number of our days on earth is already known by God and that none of us will live one minute beyond the time that God has already given each one of us.
Knowing that the days are evil and our time here on earth is limited, we must make use of our time in living as wise and not foolish.
The Apostle James describes the brevity of man's life this way in James 4:14-It is just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.
James goes on to ask "what is your life"? What value have you placed on it?
None of us know what the future holds. None of us know our number of days here on earth, only God.
Even if we lived to be 100 or even 200 years, what are those years in comparison to eternity.
How are you living out the days that God has numbered for you? What are you doing with your time? Are you wasting it by making unwise decisions or is your life producing fruit that will multiply in the kingdom of God?
We all need to understand that the days of our lives are fleeting. We are born, we live and then we die.
Man's days are numbered but God is from everlasting to everlasting.
We are exhorted in Ephesians 5:15-17 See then that you walk carefully, not as fools, but as wise men. 16 making the most of the time because the days are evil. 17 therefore, do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Learning to number our days and knowing that they are short is wise.
Thinking that you can live from day to day according to your own plan and agenda without any thought of God and His commands is foolish? You are only deceiving yourself.
Lord, teach us to number our days. Teach us to live as wise and not as foolish. Help us to realize that wisdom is the principal thing and that in all our getting, we need to get understanding.
Are you in need of divine wisdom? It is available to you on today. Here is how we get it according to Proverbs 1:17-The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
A fool despises wisdom and instruction.
The foolish and unbelieving person thinks that life will go on forever. There is always plenty of time for the man who doesn't know God. He will one day repent and believe, but not right now while it is yet day because he or she has convinced themselves that they have plenty of time and more good time with the world to be gotten.
Because of this mindset, the unwise (unbelieving) person does not number nor consider his or her days, nor what life is truly about.
If we number our days, we will truly see life as the Apostle James declares it to be which is only a "vapor" that appears for a little while and then it's gone. Think of steam from a boiling pot and how fast the steam disappears once the lid is lifted from it. That is a metaphor of life.
Have you ever given thought to these things? What is the number of your days? What will be the day of my last breath? When my last breath is drawn, will I have lived my life as one wise or foolish? When life on this side is over, where will I spend eternity?
Scripture declares in Hebrews 9:27 As it is appointed for men to die once, but after this comes the judgment.
Our lives are brief. It is described as a flower that is fully bloom in the morning and by the end of the day it is sun scorched and withered.
Psalm 103:15-16 Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. 16 The wind blows, and we are gone—as though we had never been here.
If our hope is in Christ Jesus, we are hoping in God' s eternal and unfailing love. Alive or dead, we are with the Lord. For the believer, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
If you have not been living your days here on earth as wise, but as foolish, I urge, beg and plea with you on today that you would incline your ear unto wisdom that is only found in the Word of God. I can only hope and pray that your prayer too is "Lord, teach me to number my days".
None of us will escape death, for it is an appointment that we all will keep. It can not be cancelled nor avoided for it can only be kept.
Remember, only what we do for Christ will last. Everything else will be left behind.
Loving God, worshiping God, knowing that He first loved us and proved it through His son death on a Cross and living out our few days here on earth to please Him is a wise place to invest in.
Psalm 90 is a prayer of Moses. In Moses view of the brevity of life, Moses asked God to “teach us to number our days that we might present to you a heart of wisdom.”
Is this your desire on today? If so, you too can pray this same prayer on your behalf to God the Father. "Lord, teach ME to number MY days".
I want to leave you with this thought. All of the days that God has appointed to each of us comes to us by the mercy of God. We do not deserve them and we can do nothing to earn them.
In all that God has done and shown to prove His love for us, many today are still ungrateful and unappreciative. God owes us nothing! It is He that created us and not we ourselves.
If you have been taking the days of your life for granted, I pray that today would be a day of new beginnings for you. A day in which you will begin to number your days and apply wisdom to your heart through prayer and the Word of God.
Remember: All our days are numbered and you nor I know when that number cease to be.
Seek wisdom on today. Seek God. Seek Him while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near.
