Matthew 2:3-8 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:6 “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’
7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”
Upon hearing of the birth of Jesus, the "KING OF THE JEWS" scripture declares that Herod who was the currently earthly king and all Jerusalem was "disturbed". Other translations said he was "worried, disturbed, angered".
Herod inquired of the Chief Priests and teachers of the law as to where the "SAVIOR" was born and was told in Bethlehem in Judea.
Having received his answer from the C hief Priest and Teachers of the law was not good enough for Herod, therefore, He called a secret meeting with the "Magi" who were gentile (non Jew) astrologers and interpreters from the east who saw a "STAR" in the east and set out to follow it in their attempt to find the child that is born "SAVIOR" of the world so that they may offer Him gifts.
Having arrived in Jerusalem and inquiring of the child that has been born "King of the Jews" Herod commands the 3 "wise men" to go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child and as soon as they find him, report back to him so that he too may go and worship him.”
Herod's claim of inquiry from the "WISE MEN" was for the purpose of finding the "KING OF THE JEWS" was to "worship Him." We know this not to be true because we are informed in this text he was in a 'RAGE" when he heard about the birth of "King Jesus" because in his eyes, He is the one and only king and there is and would not be any other king.
Oh, the clear picture of deceit that is revealed here! The good news is that God is Sovereign and He sees and knows all things. Nothing is hidden from His eyes!
Deceit=apaté in the greek and means deceit, deception, deceitfulness, delusion.
Herod had one plan but God had another plan. He hated Jesus so much that he ordered every child 2 years or younger be murdered in his deceitful attempt to kill Jesus.
Deception always backfires on the one it is sent from.
People of God, be very careful in how you attempt to manipulate circumstances and situations to work in your favor or to be a part of manipulation with others in attempt to destroy someone else. God sees and knows all! You will give an answer for your action of "deceit" because it should not be among us as believers.
If Herod was happy and wanted to "worship" the new born "KING" there would not have been any reason for "RAGE". The good news of the "SAVIOR" birth sould have been a reason of celebration and rejoicing, but as we see from this text it was the opposite for Herod.
Throughout the Word of God, satan is described as the "deceiver". We see this description of him when he deceived Eve in the garden.
People of God, be on guard, always watching and praying for evil and the opportunity to be a part of it is everywhere.
1 Peter 5:8 Be sober and watchful, because your adversary the devil walks around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him firmly in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
The Deceit of King Herod! Do not let that "EVIL SPIRIT" attach itself to you people of God.
God has a plan for our lives and He will reveal it at His appointed time. Do not allow "deception" to cause you to run ahead of God's plans for your life. Be of good courage and wait on the Lord.
Your choice is to obey the Herod's in your life or to obey God. We will see in the next lesson the results of Herod's obedience and allegiance to "SELF" gratification.
