1 Samuel 30:6-David was greatly distressed, for the people talked of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in spirit, each over his sons and daughters. But David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
Discouragement-athumeo in the greek= I lose heart, am despondent, am disheartened.
In the world in which we live, the opportunity to be discouraged is overwhelming.
Discouragement does not come from God but from the adversary.
Discouragement comes to all of us in many different ways and through many different kind of circumstances and people.
When discouragement raises up his ugly head in attempt to make you fee down and out, you must cast it down, reject, rebuke it, deny it with the Word of God.
2 Corinthians 10:5-Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.
If thoughts or negative people with negative thoughts are coming to you, they are not building you up but tearing you down. Reject negative thoughts and get away from negative people for in the time of discouragement you don't need any help being torn down, you need someone to encourage you and help build you back up.
As a child of God, you have authority through Christ Jesus to use the Word of God to tear down every negative thought and words every time they present themselves to you.
People of God, when discouragement comes, quitting is not an option for you.
Discouragement must be the weapon that we will purpose in our hearts and mind to fight against with the weapons of God's Word.
When you are discouraged, that is not the time to give in to it nor to give up in defeat of it. You must make up your mind that the FIGHT is on for your mind and your life.
Understand this, the battle is IN the "MIND!" This is where satan starts and ends his fights with us. That is why we are commanded to daily wash our minds with the Word of God.
God has graced us with a power on the inside of us called the "HOLY SPIRIT" that gives us the fuel to fight and keep on pressing our way in spite of.
When discouragement comes we can either see the glass half full or half empty. The choice is ours.
People of God, use your "TOOLS!!! that are found in God's bible. Spiritual warfare is real!
Discouragement is no respecter of persons. It does not matter who you are, what your status or title is, what blood line you came from, what you have or don't have, your color, nationality, gender or age.
Trust me! Regardless of who you are or who you may think you are, discouragement will find you too!
David, in this text had been anointed to by God to be Israel's next king and in the process between the anointing of him as Israel's next king and the actual manifestation of it, he was discouraged over and over again.
As a matter of fact, David was constantly on the run for his life from King Saul who wanted him dead. David faced discouragement on a daily basis for he was constantly on the run for his life.
In this text, David had left the people of God and joined forces with the enemies of God, the Philistines. They had given him a city called Ziklag.
One day the Philistines was going out to battle against David's own people. David attempted to join forces with them against his people, but God did not allow it to happen, but in stead he stirred up the hearts of the Philistines against David in distrust. Therefore, David was rejected by them from going to battle with them.
Having returned to his city (Ziklag) with his men, David's wives, children, servants, and all the families of his soldiers were gone and their city was burned to the ground.
TALK ABOUT DISCOURAGEMENT? David was discouraged.
David's discouragement was overwhelming. His family was gone, his city was burned and to top if off, his men blamed him for this catastrophic event.
David's men were so discouraged that they had thoughts of killing David themselves by stoning him to death.
This scene is a clear picture of discouragement and where it can take us in the mind, even to the point of wanting to murder. Not so much physical murder, but it causes us to want to murder people with our words too.
David, in the mist of discouragement, despair, chaos and confusion had decided that he would do the one thing we all need to do when discouragement comes and overwhelms us.
David remembered His God and how he had delivered him so many times in the past, therefore, scripture declares that in the midst of discouragement, David encouraged himself by seeking and inquiring of the Lord in his situation.
People of God, seeking God's help in the time of discouragement is key.
Let's listen to what happened when David seek the Lord.
David's discouragement did not end in victory for the enemy, but in victory for David and his men. Let's listen to vs#8-And David inquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!!!!! LOOK AT GOD!!!!
Discouragement is visiting you today? TAKE IT TO GOD IN PRAYER!!!
David is proof to all of us today that discouragement has no power for we too can declares this about our God from the words of my Pastor Isaac J. Holt who declared to us from the Word of God, "HIM ABLE"!!
