James 1:23-24 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man viewing his natural face in a mirror. 24 He views himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.
The call and the reminder on today is that we MUST not only be a hearer of the Word of God, but, we must obey it. In other words, hearing God's Word is one part and the other part is doing what it tells us to do!
The Apostle James says if you just hear and not obey, you are liken unto a person who views him or herself in a mirror and walks away forgetting what kind of person you are.
What's the purpose of a mirror? The purpose of a mirror is used to examine ourselves.
When we look at ourselves in the mirror of God's Word we not only see who we are with all our spots and flaws, but we also we see our desperate need for Christ and His transforming power in our lives.
What benefit do we receive in hearing the Word of God and never putting it into practice by obeying it?
God, through the leading of His Holy Spirit, wants to lead, guide and direct us into all truth and righteousness.
The deception today is that many believe that coming to church to hear the Word or listening to it on tv or the radio and never believing, receiving nor obeying it is all well and good. "At least I can say I went to church" is the famous words of many who refuse to receive God's abundance life through salvation.
Believe it or not, but this mindset is a trick of the enemy and in our doing this, satan has deceived us into believing that we have benefited spiritually in just going to church to hear the word and not apply it to our lives.
When this happens, we are worse off than before because we have now heard and not obeyed. We have left hearing without any intended plan of acting upon that which we have heard from God's Word.
Scripture declares in this text on today that we must not only be a hearer but also a doer of the Word of God.
There is no salvation apart form the Word of God. Faith apart from God is not faith in God.
Jesus said in John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:5-A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.
Once we have received the knowledge of truth from God's Word, we are without excuse. Jesus Himself declares these words in John 15:22-If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
God speaks and we MUST obey if our goal is to spend eternity with Him.
Now if you goal is to do as you please and not spend eternity with God, then keep trucking ahead in your own way. The good news is that on today, if you are reading this blog, you have been given truth from God's Word which you can not deny or find any excuse concerning being a hearer and doer of God's Word.
Hearing the Word of God and obeying it goes hand in hand. It is like a hand and glove. Our faith is not effective if it is not activated by obedience to the Word of God.
There are blessings in hearing and obeying the Word of God.
Luke 11:28-Jesus replied, "But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice."
Where do you stand today concerning hearing and obeying the Word of God?
Are you applying what you have heard from God's Word? Or, are you disobeying by doing life your way instead of the way that God has outlined for you in His Word?
Evidence of and the fulfillment of being a hearer and not a doer of God's Word is prevalent in our world today. Matthew 15:8 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
Where do you stand concerning the word of God? If you choose to answer or not, either way, your actions have answered for us.
Remember, hearing and doing goes hand in hand.
God and His Word is one. We can not have one without the other.
If you have been a hearer and not a doer, my advise to you on today is that you seek the Holy Spirit presence to help guide and direct you in the path in which God would have you to go.
Confessing Christ bragging about your faith is not gonna get it. You must be a hearer and a doer of the Word of God, then and only then will you move from bragging about you to bragging on God.
Hearing and doing is the command today.
