Mark 1:40-41 A leper came to Him, pleading with Him and kneeling before Him, saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, extended His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I will. Be clean.” 42 As soon as He had spoken, the leprosy immediately departed from him, and he was cleansed.
Leprosy=lepra in the greek. A deeply infectious, contagious skin disease rendering a person "ceremonially unclean" in Jewish society. Leprosy start with discoloration of a patch of skin. . If left untreated, the disease eventually affects the internal organs as well which can cause deformity.
The person with this disease was considered an outcast in society and was barred from temple worship and service because it represented sin and uncleanliness.
Lepers were required to live outside of the city and their presence was off limit to public markets and society as a whole, but here in this text, we see a man with leprosy passing through the city and now makes his move to have an encounter with Jesus, which was a no-no in that day for it was a disease that can be transmitted from one person to the next.
Lepers were to be separated from society and if they would go out in public, as they passed by they would have to proclaim with a loud voice "unclean, unclean."
The leper saw Jesus and I believe he not only heard about the miracles Jesus performed, but he probably saw some of the people who had been sick and diseased in the past that are now healed.
I can only assume, but I believe he made the same statement to himself that the woman with the issue of blood said to herself when she said "if I could but get to Jesus, I know I would be made whole."
I believe this leper also said to himself that day when he saw Jesus "today is my day and I am going to make my move. Today is the day that I will be healed and set free from this horrible disease."
In my minds eyes, I tried to imagine this scene where the leper approaches Jesus in humble submission by first kneeling before Him and making his request known unto Jesus.
Jesus, being God in the flesh, has power and authority over all things, therefore, He was not concerned about having the disease of leprosy passed on to Him. He is God!
The diseased man could not pass his disease on to Jesus, but Jesus could pass grace and mercy with compassionate healing on to the leper. WOW! Look at our God!
Upon the confession of the leper's faith in Christ with this statement"if you are willing" proves that the leper believed and knew that his healing was up to Jesus now.
The faith of the leper brought about his healing. Jesus touched him and he was healed.
Jesus is not moved by anything but faith for scripture declares in Hebrews 11:6-And without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
The leper received his healing that day because he not only believed that Jesus was able to heal him, but he believed that Jesus had the power and the ability to do just that for him.
Let's listen to his request after he knelt down before Jesus. He said to Jesus “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” That's faith!
The leper knew that this could be the day that He could receive his miracle. His falling to his knees shows his respect for who Jesus is and his humility showed his respect for He knew he was standing in the presence of God.
This day was different for the leper. Instead of passing by and shouting "unclean, unclean" the leper approaches Jesus and he received the miracle that he desperately stood in need of.
From this day forward, the leper was able to say "SHALOM"! He had been changed in the winkling of an eye.
Here is the most shocking part of this text: Jesus touched a leper!! He went against the current of man's traditions, He went against the custom and rule of the day just to saved a life.
GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!!! Jesus touched a leper! WOW!!!
Just one touch and the leper was healed by faith.
What is it that you need healing of? Is it your marriage, is it a family relationship, it is a medial illness, salvation, peace in the storms of life, financial assistance, restoration back to the Father, an unsaved spouse or wayward child? What is it? Whatever it is, take it to Jesus for He alone is the one who can bring healing and restoration to it all with just one touch.
Real compassion is more than a feeling. Real compassion moves from feelings to action.
If you are willing to activate your faith on today like this leper did, not only will you receive God's grace and mercy, but you will also receive compassion for the much needed healing you stand in need of on today.
Out of compassion of the leper, Jesus responded with these words “I will. Be clean.”
Immediately after responding to the leper with a resounding "YES" and "BE CLEAN", scripture declares that the leper was healed immediately.
JUST ONE TOUCHFROM THE HANDS OF JESUS! IS THIS WHERE YOUR NEED IS ON TODAY?
Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”
I now closes with a few words from this song titled: "HE TOUCH ME"
Shackled by a heavy burden,
'Neath a load of guilt and shame.
Then the hand of Jesus touched me,
And now I am no longer the same.
He touched me, Oh He touched me,
And oh the joy that floods my soul!
Something happened and now I know,
He touched me and made me whole.
JUST ONE TOUCH! Jesus touched me and I am no longer the same!
JUST ONE TOUCH AND YOUR LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME!
THANK YOU LORD!!
