Covetousness=pleonexia in the greek. Deeds of coveting, greed, greediness. greedy desire to have more.
Webster dictionary describes Covetousness as an inappropriate desire for what belongs to another; or an excessive desire to obtain something of this world; wealth, power, prestige, property or material things.
The desire and greed for someone's else possession. Does this describes you or someone you know?
Covetousness had lead many people to many extremes, even to the point of killing someone to possess what they have as seen in this text.
Let's look at where "Covetousness" lead King Ahab and His wife Jezebel.
Desire for another's possessions is where we find King Ahab in this text. The saddest thing about covetousness is the place where it can take you and the length in which one would go to get that thing which they greed for.
So it is in this text with King Ahab and his wife Jezreel who was also determined to give her husband his greedy desire at the cost of someone else's life.
We are reminded in Exodus 20:17-"You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
1 King 21:1-16 Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel right by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 2 And after this Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard, so that I can have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near to my house, and I will give you a better vineyard for it, or if you prefer, I will give you its worth in money.”
3 Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers.”
4 Ahab returned home angry and depressed because of the answer Naboth the Jezreelite had given him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He lay down on his bed and sulked and would not eat any bread.
5 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said, “Why is your spirit so sad that you refuse to eat bread?”
6 And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if you prefer, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’ ”
7 Jezebel his wife said to him, “Are you not the governor of the kingdom of Israel? Get up and eat bread, and let your heart be happy, for I will get the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite for you.”
8 So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles that were in the city where Naboth lived. 9 In the letters she wrote,
“Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people, 10 and set two men, sons of Belial,[a] before him, to bear witness against him, saying, ‘You blasphemed God and the king.’ And then carry him out and stone him, so that he will die.”
11 The men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them, as it was written in the letters that she had sent to them. 12 They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth on high among the people. 13 Two men, children of Belial, came in and sat in front of him, and the men of Belial witnessed against Naboth in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth blasphemed God and the king.” Then they carried him out of the city and stoned him to death. 14 Then they sent word to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.”
15 When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, she said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to sell to you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.” 16 When Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, he got up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.
Where has "Covetousness" lead you at on today? Who or what has "Covetousness" caused you to destroy or harm for the rest of their lives? Whom have you gone along with in "Covetousness" that has left many lives destroyed, many families broken, many children abandoned, many homeless, many suffering, devastated, hurt, or even caused their lives to be taken? Who is it?
King Ahab wanted Naboth's vineyard and because he refused to give in to the king's greed, Ahab went into a state of depression.
After having seen her husband in a down trodden state of mind, she inquired of him as to what was wrong. He told her that Naboth refused to hand over his property and she took matters into her own hands and had him killed.
Naboth's blood was on both of their hands. King Ahab and Jezebel. Oh, the price of greed!
Because of Ahab "covetousness" his wife became a victim of greed, power and control. She was used by satan to the point of ordering Naboth to be killed so her husband could possess his vineyeard.
One thing for sure and that is God's Word is true. Everyone of us will "REAP" what we have sown. The same seed that we plant will produce the same crop of that seed in which we have sown at harvest time.
The Word of the Lord to Ahab was this in 1 Kings 21:17-19 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 18 “Go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in Naboth’s vineyard, where he has gone to take possession of it. 19 Say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Have you not murdered a man and seized his property?’ Then say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: In the place where dogs licked up Naboth’s blood, dogs will lick up your blood—yes, yours!’”
King Ahab did not get away with what He did to Naboth out of greed and a spirit of "covetousness". No, God saw it all and reminded him of it through the Prophet Elijah.
Oh, the sickness of greed that lead to "covetousness" and death of the innocent.
Ahab and Jezebel coveted Naboth''s vineyard. What is it that you have purposed in your heart to covet that belongs to someone else?
Where has greed lead you on today? To a place of desperation and deception or to the foot of the cross in repentance and forgiveness? Where has it lead you on today?
Covetousness caused Ahab and Jezebel to take the life of Naboth, but "covetousness" also cost them their lives.
I plea with all of you on today that you would NEVER give "covetousness" the opportunity to take up residence in your hearts and mind for it is a destructive weapon that returns 100% to you of what it has given out on your behalf.
"Covetousness" is a deadly poison. Do not drink it for it will eventually destroy you.
