Jeremiah 6:16 - Thus says the Lord, stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths where the good way is and walk in it, and you shall find rest for your souls. But they said, “We will not walk in it.”
In this text, God is speaking trough the Prophet Jeremiah to His rebellious and wicked people, who at this time were willfully rebelling against God in their choice of an idolatry lifestyle. They had turned their back on the true and living God and choose to follow sinful behavior and practices of other nations and pagan gods of those nations.
God had warned His people over and over again through His prophets of the consequences of rebellion and sin against Him. He had promised to send them into captivity by their enemies because of their disobedience and sinful heart condition. If you read further in the text, you will see where they were eventually taken into captivity some years later. God word WILL come to pass!
Today, God is still warning His people to turn from their evil ways and serve the Lord their God. The question is "are you listening and obeying? Or, are you like Israel was back then in doing what was right in your own eyes"?
Where do you stand concerning God's command to choose the "old path?"
Instead of immediate punishment or wrath, God is yet giving them another chance to turn back to Him by choosing the "old path." The path that leads back to a right relationship with God, the path of restoration and forgiveness of their sins.
It is the Lord's will that none should perish! If you have not yet experience the consequences of your sinful disobedience towards God, realize the fact that God is giving you time to turn from your wicked ways through repent and a washing of your mind with the Word of God.
The truth of the matter is this: one day God's patience concerning sin will run out and punishment will be sent upon you for it.
In the eyes of God, there is only 1 of 2 roads to travel. None of us can travel both at the same time, therefore we have to choose which one we will daily travel.
The choice that is daily laid before all of us is either the right way or the wrong way. The right way (old path) is lead by God and the wrong way (path of separation and wrath) is lead by satan. There is no middle ground. In or out, right or wrong, sheep or goat, wheat or tear?
We all are daily living our lives on the road that is either with God or apart from God.
The picture that is given in this text is of one who is traveling and ends up at a place of decision making called a "fork in the road."
This "road" signifies a place where a choice MUST be made! God offers help when we get to this place. We can either receive it or reject it for the choice is ours. It is His desire that we take the "old way", but He will not force us to.
The choice on this "path" is "blessings or curse." God or self is our only choice at this cross road.
The old way isn't the popular way! It is a way that is being abandoned daily by people who have decided that new is better. They are leaving the true and living God to serve other gods called titles, materialism, degrees, money, status, cliques, etc.
Many in our world today have abandon the fellowship of the saints at Sunday services, the Bible has no longer become their guide for life and living, the old songs of the faith, old fashioned worship, praising the Lord, and preaching is not for them for they have found a new and better way than God's way.
Those who are traveling opposite of the "old path" believe they have found a better road to trave than the one God commands them to travel. They are not focusing on what is at the end of this road, but just on the here and now. Eat, drink and be merry! Let the good times roll! OH THE HORROR THAT WILL BE MET AT THE END OF THIS PATH IS UNIMAGINABLE!
Unfortunately, many today have chosen not to take the "old path" but God's Word is declaring today this is the road to travel.
One thing of a surety on today, God has not change and neither has His Word that is written in His Bible.
Just as the Holy Spirit leads and guides us in the path in which we should take, we find God here in this text telling the traveler to ask for the "old path" which is the best route for he or she to take.
Refusing to obey the commands of God and the leading of His Holy Spirit will cause us to blindly set ourselves for hurt, harm and danger ahead. Therefore, as in this text, we are being told to ask God for directions. Ask Him which path is best for us to take in life.
It is very important that we ask for the "old way" because we are reminded in scripture about the rewards and dangers of the 2 different paths.
Let's listen to what Jesus has to say about the "old path" and the "path of self" in Matthew 7:13-14 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad and easy to travel is the path that leads the way to destruction and eternal loss, and there are many who enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow and difficult to travel is the path that leads the way to[everlasting] life, and there are few who find it.
God's desire for you and I is that we too travel the "old path" where there is security for the saving of our souls, redemption, restoration, fellowship, safety, peace and rest for our weary souls now and in eternity.
It is on the "old path" that God will lead us in fellowship with Him by the presence of His Holy Spirit.
It is on the "old Path" that our intended destination with God is guaranteed.
This text tells us that some decided that they WILL NOT walk in the Lord's will and in the Lord's path. They have been convinced to believe that creation is smarter than the Creator.
As we scan see throughout the Bible, there is a HIGH price to pay for walking the path of "SELF".
People of God, regardless of what the world (unsaved) choose to do and the path they choose to travel, my plea to you is if it is not the "old path" that God has commanded you to travel on, I urge you to no longer travel that path of destruction, but to repent to God and get back on the "old path" today!
Yet, no matter what the world does, let us, the people of the Lord, stand tall in the "old way."
People of God, do not be ashamed of who you are and who God has created you to be.. With heads lifted up high unto heaven and with our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith, let us keep marching on the "old path" for it is the ONLY path that will lead us to life everlasting with the Father.
People of God, purpose in your heart that you will be everything the Lord your God has commanded you to be in Him.
Any other path will lead to eternal death and everlasting torment in the lake of fire according to God's Word found in His Bible.
People of God, it is ok to look like a fool before the world in your relationship and obedience to Christ. God has promised you that your labor is not in vain! These are the words from the mouth of God that will come to pass concerning you and I.
Stay in the "old way" and you will be glad you did when our short life on this side is over.
Show me the way? Is this your prayer cry to God on today? It's definitely mine!
Thank you Lord for leading me down the path of the road that leads to the "old way".
I love you Lord! Thank you Father!
