Matthew 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in nor steal, 21 for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
In this text Jesus is in no way speaking against material possessions nor financial wealth because it is He who gives you the power and ability to obtain it and it is He who causes men to be successful and prosperous.
3 John 1:2 Beloved, I desire that in all things thou shouldest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospers.
The point that Jesus is driving home to all of us is to not let our love of the gift He gives us be greater than our love for the Giver of the gifts.
Where are my treasures being stored? This is a question every living creature must daily ponder.
Are your treasures being stored up for eternity on earth or eternity in heaven?
The bible declares this about earth and eternity in 1 John 2:17 - And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
Having knowledge of what the future holds as far as earth is concerned what are your thoughts concerning storing up treasures on earth?
If you can’t see beyond earth and all it’s temporary pleasures you will not only be disappointed but you will be horrified at the end of life because everything upon this earth is temporary and short lived and only what we do for Christ will last.
Job 1:21 Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised. This was Job’s attitude toward his earthly treasures and his life and health which was under attack by satan at the time. Job had God and eternity in view and was not moved by his current loss of earthly treasures and his health at that time.
Storing up treasures in heaven or on earth? Your treasures, where are they?
In all we say and do, we MUST keep eternity in view for this is what God is concerned about. Are we treating our neighbors right, are we loving God first and our neighbors as our self, are we offering encouragement and wisdom from the word of God to those hurting around us, are we forgiving those who have hurt and offended us, are we loving our enemies, are we taking advantage of helping the poor, orphans and widows, are we sharing and being the example of Christ to those we encounter? These are the ways in which we are storing up treasures in heaven while on earth.
One thing of a surety is that our eternal perspective affect our earthly priorities.
We can choose to focus our lives on everything that is temporary on earth or we can make the choice to choose the eternal treasures that God offers through a personal relationship with Him through Christ Jesus that will benefit us now and throughout eternity.
There is nothing in the world more important that a personal relationship with God.
We are reminded in scripture that we ALL need to make a choice as to how we will build our future.
Are we building our future from a temporary or eternal perspective?
Jesus warns us of the danger of storing up treasures on earth. He said they will be destroyed by moth, rust and thieves if earth is where we store them up.
On the other hand, we are given encouragement of what happens when we store up treasures in heaven while on earth. They are in the safety of God’s hands and it is in His eternal plans is where moth, rust nor thieves can not break entry nor destroy our treasures.
Where we store our treasures is a matter of the heart. The love of this world or the love of God is the determining factor.
Where are your treasures currently being stored? Ponder this question on today and if it is not in things eternal I pray that you seek the Lord for guidance in storing up eternal treasures which will lead you away from the collision course that is guaranteed to come from storing up treasures on earth.
