Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; and He knows those who take refuge in Him.
Nahum was an Old Testament Minor Prophet who prophesied judgment to the people in the city of Nineveh which was a great city and the capitol of the Assyrian Empire. It was also a wicked city and destined for destruction because of their sin. God said that He was going to bury them because they were so vile.
Prior to Nahum, Jonah had preached God's wrath and their urgent need to turn back to God and they repented, but now a hundred years later the people have reverted again to their old ways and the judgment of God is about to come.
The Prophet Nahum had been declaring the fierceness of God's anger, wrath and fury that God will pour out on the city of Nineveh like fire if the people refuse to repent and turn from their vile ways.
In the midst of speaking judgment, in the midst of all the words of wrath, anger and doom, this text before us stands out as a ray of hope.
In this particular passage of scripture the Prophet Nahum declares that God is not only good but that He is a stronghold in the day of trouble and that God knows those who trust in Him.
It is not the Lord's will that any should perish. He is good and merciful and will show mercy to those who are willing to turn from their wicked ways and turn back to Him.
In reading this text many would probably say yes, this is easy to say if things are going well, children are doing well in school, finances look good, health is good, family is doing good and life is successful and nothing to worry about.
The truth of the matter is that what Nahum is saying about God is true! He is good, He is our shelter in the time of storms of life and He knows our names, He knows the strands of hair on our head, He knows our thoughts before we think them and yes, He has made a way for us through Christ Jesus to come boldly to His throne of grace and mercy for the help we need in our time of trouble so yes, God is good.
The name "Yahweh" is a strong Tower. It brings me comfort when I call upon His name in the time of trouble and sorrow. His name gives me strength when I am tempted to feel weak, His names give me hope in times when despair wants to show up, His name is a defense weapon in the time of opposition in my mind.
King David describes God in an almost identical way in Psalm 46:1-God is our refuge and strength, a well-proven help in trouble.
The Lord God is so good to ALL of us, all who call upon His name.
Right now, this very moment as you are reading this blog is a good time to come to God and repent to God right where you are. Come, praise and thank Him for His goodness.
Like the city of Nineveh, even if you have committed vile sin against the Lord God and is still living in that lifestyle, God is still willing to show you mercy if you repent and turn from your wicked ways because He is good like that.
Because God is good, He is willing to take you back. Yes, all those who ask Him for forgiveness He will gladly receive.
If you have wandered away from God and living a sinful lifestyle apart from God He is calling you back to Him and is saying to you "I will take you back."
Jesus declares these words concerning you in John 6:37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
John 6:44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
Today is the day to cry out to the God of grace and mercy for He promises to wrap you up in His love, goodness and kindness if you would come right now to Him.
No matter how desperate you are or how deep you are in sin, God is calling you to Him on today. It is time to come back to the Lord while you still yet have breath in your body. Surrender to God who declares to you on today through the Prophet Nahum that He is good.
God is good, He is a protector and He knows those who trust in Him.
Today is the day of Salvation! NOW is the acceptable time.
If you turn from your evil ways, God promises to heal you and make you whole again in Him.
I know you stand in need of God's goodness on today so why not come? God is waiting on you with arms open wide.
The goodness of God's grace and mercy or the wrath of God? Which do you prefer?
Nineveh had the same choice that is being offered to the world today. As The Prophet Nahum told Nineveh to turn back to God, I say the same to you on today. The choice is yours and the consequences of not doing so is yours too.
Today is the day for you to choose whom you will serve. The True and living God or the Gods of idolatry.
My prayer today is that souls would cry out to God in surrender to His will for their lives on today.
The days are evil and the storm is coming. Look around the world and we can clearly see that God is calling the nations to Him.
As the saints of old used to say "there is a storm out on life's ocean and it's moving this way, If your soul is not anchored in Jesus you will surely be forever lost.
Where, who or what have you taken refuge in? God knows those who have taken refuge in Him so you can't fool God, only self.
Today is the day to seek the mercy of God!
NOTHING is more valuable than your soul, the part of you that will live forever. Where will it spend eternity? With God or apart from God? Ponder this question on today and make the decision to let Jesus be your choice.
Good and Merciful is our God!
Bless you all on today.
