2 Timothy 3:5 Know this: In the last days perilous times will come. 2 Men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, trucebreakers, slanderers, unrestrained, fierce, despisers of those who are good, 4 traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness, but denying its power. Turn away from such people.
PERILOUS=chalepos in the greek and mean hard to do or bear, to take, troublesome, dangerous, fierce, harsh.
The Apostle Paul writes this letter to his son in the Gospel, Timothy while he himself awaits an uncertain future in a prison in Rome. Paul knew that his departure from earth was soon approaching and he wanted to warn Timothy and encourage him on how he could survive the perilous days that WILL be coming ahead.
Does "perilous" describes the condition of the world in which we now live? A time where anything goes, right is wrong and wrong is right, mothers against daughters, fathers against sons, unrestraint of every kind imaginable, everyone doing what is right in their own eyes, fornication and adultery running rampant, disobedient and wayward children, no respect for authority, etc.? Are we there yet?
The Apostle Paul in this text, speaks of the condition of the hearts of many people in the world in the "last days" which is the time prior to Christ 2nd coming.
The Apostle describes the hearts of the people in this way in the last days: lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 without natural affection, trucebreakers, slanderers, unrestrained, fierce, despisers of those who are good, 4 traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness, but denying its power.
Is the Apostle describing the characteristics that we see in humanity in our world today? Ponder this question for a minute as you reflect on your surroundings.
When is Christ 2nd return? No man knows the day nor the hour, but God has given us signs throughout scripture of what will be happening in the world when Christ does make his 2nd return to gather up His people who belongs to Him.
When asked about the sign of His 2nd coming and return in Matthew 24 by His disciples, Jesus told them that no man knows when His second coming will be, only the Father in heaven knows that.
Jesus did not give us a time of his return, but He gave us many signs to look for. Jesus does tell them that perilous times will be "terrible" days in the earth ahead of His coming. Things will get worse before they get better.
Jesus said in Matthew 24 that during the last days many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. There will be increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, wars and rumor or wars, but the end is NOT yet.
We are warned in scripture about the days ahead and since we are warned, it would be wise for us who claim to belong to Christ to stay ready and those who don't know Him to get prepared to one day meet Christ.
In other words, it is time to get out house in order where our relationship with Christ is concerned if we one day plan to spend eternity with Him.
Are we now living in those perilous days that Jesus and the Apostle Paul describes in scripture?
Perilous times! Are we living there yet? No doubt about it!
Jesus says this in Matthew 24:4 "Take heed that no man deceive you."
In knowing what we know through scripture about these perilous days that are quickly approaching and are guaranteed to come our way, how do we prepare to survive them as people of God?
Here are a few survival tools we can use. (1) Stay connected to god through prayer and the word of God. (2) hold fast to what you know to be true in the Word of God. Do not waiver in your faith, but believe what God has written in His Bible in spite of what you may see or hear. (3) Follow Godly leaders that you know are living their lives according to the Word of God. (4) be not conformed by this world and all it's temporary pleasures, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your minds (washing of your minds) with the Word of God (5) be watchful and alert. Put on the whole armor of God, daily girding yourself with the truth of the Gospel for at hour we expect not, the Son of Man shall return.
The Apostle Paul reminds Timothy of this in vs#13-14 of this text. Let's listen: 13-while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. You must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you.
People of God, Everything we need to know about going to heaven can be found in the Bible. God has not kept His Word hidden from us, but has revealed it to ALL who would trust Him and believe. We need add nothing to it nor take anything away from it. The Word of God is sufficient in and of itself!
People of God, it is through the Word of God that we have been equipped to survive and win the battles of life that are guaranteed to come our way.
The Bible is the Christian’s sword by which we fight the battles of life. But a sword does no good if it is left on the table, in the back seat of the car or on the shelf. You have to take it out and use it. Meditate on it day and night.
Without study and daily meditation on the Word of God, you are not benefiting from it.
Preparation for the perilous days ahead can not be done with out the Word of God. Joshua 1:8-Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
Stay alert people of God! The enemy is lurking, seeking whom he may devour. Please, please, do not let it be you!
God bless you all.
