1 Peter 5:8 Be sober and watchful, because your adversary the devil walks around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
SOBER=sóphroneó in the greek and is defined as being of sound mind; to be temperate.
WATCHFUL=grégoreó in the greek and means to be awake, to watch, stay alert; give strict attention to, be cautious.
People of God, we have an adversary who is constantly seeking the opportunity to catch us off guard, therefore, stay alert and be watchful of the enemy.
Yes, spiritual warfare is real! It was back then and still is today.
The christians of Peter's day to whom he was writing to were scattered abroad and being persecuted because of their faith. Peter wanted to encourage them to not only remain faithful in the midst of persecution, but he also wanted to warn them about the adversary who is the one bringing about the opposition and persecution they were experiencing.
The command from Peter to the people of God is to be self-controlled and alert because the devil, our adversary goes around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Peter did not say the adversary is a roaring lion, he said that he goes around liking unto (appearing) to be a lion with his fearful roar in his attempt to destroy us.
The necessity for every believer is to stand firm in your faith. Hold tight to what you know to be true in the Word of God without wavering, in spite of persecution. Don't quit, stay connected to God!
As the people of God, we are not to be surprised that the adversary is out to attack those who are walking with the Lord.
1 Peter 4:12-13 2 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
People of God, we know the enemy is out to destroy us, but Jesus declares the opposite for us on today in John 10:10 The thief does not come, except to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
What the enemy does is he seek to find out where our weak spot is and he begin to work on us and weary us out in that area. If your weakness is a bad habit, temptation, etc. it's that place that the enemy is going to seek to attack us at so we have to be alert and watchful as we go about our day.
In the midst of persecution and suffering we must stay in faith, prayer, the Word of God and in tune with the leading of God's Holy Spirit. Our dependency must totally be on God to help us survive the fiery dots of the enemy. It is the Lord our God who is our strength when we are weak.
Peter tells us how to stand our ground in the midst of suffering and persecution in verse #9-11 Resist him firmly in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
10 But after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called us to His eternal glory through Christ Jesus, will restore, support, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Here is Peter's remedy for surviving the attacks of the enemy in times of uncertainty and persecution.
(1) Resist him by standing your ground by being firm in your faith. James 4:7- Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
(2) Understand the fact that you are not suffering alone. Christians around the world suffer. 2 Timothy 3:12-In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
The good news about the Christian suffering is the fact that after we have suffered a little while, the Lord our God will restore, strengthen and establish us in Him.
People of God, regardless of what you may have to suffer for righteousness sake, be it rejection, persecution, abandonment, loss, hurt, suffering, etc., NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give into fear or compromise for the Lord your God is still with you even in your suffering. NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!!!
People of God, the Lord our God has assured us in His Word that better times are ahead. Even though in your situation it may look like the enemy is winning right now, HE IS NOT!
People of God, the Lord our God promise us that one day we who have placed our faith and trust in Him will have a glorious experience with Him in heaven. We will reap the harvest if we faint not!
The Glory We Will Experience -He will make us perfect, establish us, strengthen us and settle us. When will this happen? When we leave this world to go to that place that Jesus declares in John 14 that He has prepared for us. That place in heaven where the things which trouble us now will be no more for they are not allowed in heaven.
In our glorious experience in heaven, people of God, there will be no more persecution, suffering, burdens, trials, sickness or death. Life as we know it now will be replaced with joy, peace, glory and everlasting love.
The adversary is on your track and roaring like a lion after you? RESIST HIM! Stand up against Him with the Word of God. Decree and declare the word of God over you, your family and your life. Be steadfast in your faith knowing that YOUR GOD has already defeated the devil over 2k years ago and that victory for you and I is found in the blood of Jesus.
2 Corinthians 2:14-But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ's triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.
People of God, victory is yours even in the midst of pain and suffering. Look unto Jesus who is the author and finisher of your faith.
Lord we thank you that we are triumphant through Christ Jesus even in the midst of suffering and persecution.
SOBER MINDED AND ALERT IS THE CALL TO YOU ON TODAY GOD'S PEOPLE FOR IT IS THERE WHERE YOU CAN FIND AND HAVE PEACE AND REST IN GOD ALONE.
Thank You Lord for your Word that helps sustain us when all else fails.
Lord, we love you and we look unto the hills from whence our help comes from knowing that our help comes from you.
WE LOVE YOU LORD AND OUR HOPE AND TRUST IS IN YOU LORD!!
Thank you Lord for being a "FAITHFUL, LOVING AND CARING FATHER" to your children.
Your Servant Debra
