Everyone of us are either spiritually alive or spiritually dead. We have either accepted Jesus Christ as Savior or we haven't. There is no middle ground where salvation is concerned. We either or are we aren't.
Jesus declares that the way to determine the difference between those who have eternal life with the Father and those who do not is the fact that those who have eternal life have heard God's Word spoken through Christ and have believed what He has said on behalf of the Father who has sent Him to all of humanity.
Those who are spiritually dead are those who refuse to not only hear God's Word through Christ, but they also refuse to believe on Him and His spoken words given to them by the Father who sent Jesus to them.

The religious leaders of Jesus day who willing refuse to believe Jesus and the Father was one heard the voice of God speaking through Jesus but refuse to submit to God's authoritative words because of their unbelief as to who Jesus said He was as God in human form.
In spite of the many miracles and evidence that was presented over and over again throughout Jesus' life and His ministry, the religious leaders then and many and many today with that same religious leaders spirit still refuse to hear God through Christ and believe in Him and obey.
What about us today? We have heard God's Spoken Word over and over again through so many different channels of mass communication that is available to us today, but yet many today still refuse to believe on God's Son Jesus who was sent to save them from the penalty of sin and eternal death.
