James 1:22 Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
The call today from God through the Apostle James to the people of God is that we MUST move beyond being happy, comfortable or content with just hearing what the Word of God says, but that we MUST move to a place in our faith where we not only hear but obey that which we have heard from God.
Talk is cheap! Faith without works is dead!
We know that the scripture declares that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Yes, this is how we obtain faith but in order for our faith to grow there has to be a daily and continual process called (transformation of the mind) through the Word of God which in turns teaches and helps us to obey what we have heard in the Word of God.
When we got saved we became new creatures in Christ Jesus. Our way of thinking now has to be changed which in turn causes our behavior to change. None of this can happen without obedience to the Word of God. It is the hearing and believing of the Word of God that has saved us.
When salvation comes we are not the same people we once were prior to salvation. As Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17 “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.
The problem with many people today is that they are hearing the word and are not applying nor obeying the word of God in their lives.
Trying to wing it with God won’t work! You have to use all the gas inside of you and go full throttle with God cause if not, your connection line to God WILL clog up.
People of God, when you attend weekly bible study and Sunday services what do you do with the preached word you have heard? Are you sharing and applying it to your own life? Or, are you just hearing and being satisfied right there?
We all seem to hear well and we often agree with what we have heard but the question still remains as to what we are doing with that which we have heard God speak to us?
Our faith will never grow without being put into action. We have to work our faith!
To be hearers only and not hearers and doers of the Word of God we deceive ourselves and are lead astray by false reasoning in our own minds.
We can’t afford to look at Scripture and ignore it because our life now and in the future depends upon hearing, believing and application of God’s word.
We are reminded in this text in vs#22-But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.
Let’s listen to what James says about those who hears the Word only and does nothing with it and those who hear it and obey it.
HEARERS ONLY: James 1:23-24 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
HEARERS AND DOERS: James 1:25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it--not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it--they will be blessed in what they do.
People of God, where are you in your faith? You hear and obey only when it’s convenient or you hear and obey if convenient or not?
We can talk Jesus all day long, confess God, quote as much scriptures as we want, jump and shout all we want, sing to the depth of our lungs on the choir, be the best usher, preacher, teacher, singer and we can tell people our testimony and witness about God all we want, but if we are only hearing and not applying and obeying the Word of God daily in our lives, we are making noise and are a tinkling symbols who are only fooling ourselves.
The word of God declares that obedience is better than sacrifice! God does not care about our rituals and traditions, He wants our “OBEDIENCE” to what He commands of us. He wants us to not only be hearers of His Word but also doers.
Operating in disobedience? You will NEVER enter into a personal relationship with God with a spirit of disobedience. You will instead, daily miss out on the GREATEST love relationship you could ever experience.
Today is the day to “PICK UP” our Cross and follow Christ in obedience to Him as He obeyed His Father with these profound words, “not my will but thy will be done”!
People of God if we are obeying that which we have learned from the Word of God, indeed we are demonstrating God’s truth in our lives and a GREAT reward awaits us in eternity with God.
The call today is obedience and we ALL need to adhere with urgency.
