Luke 10:41-42 Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed. And Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken from her.”
Distracted=being pulled or dragged in different directions.
Martha or Mary? Which describes us?
One day as Jesus was passing through Bethany, He made a stop by the home of His friends Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Jesus was welcomed in by Martha who was distracted by much serving.
Having found herself working alone with her task at hand, she goes to Jesus and complains that she has to work alone while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus.
Having become not only distracted, but frustrated too, Martha goes to Jesus to complain about Mary, accuses Him of not caring that she had to do all the work alone and demanded that He make Mary help.
Can we see what anger and frustration brought upon Martha all because she chose to be distracted with serving and not being served?
Believe it or not but distraction brings along with it stress, attitudes and bad behavior.
Distraction not only caused Martha worry and frustration, but it got her focus off of what was important. We know this to be true for Jesus responded to her with emphasis on getting her undivided attention in mentioning her name twice. Jesus said "Martha, Martha," "you are worried and upset about many things.
Martha serving was not a bad idea, it is just that she chose the wrong time to do it. Jesus said Mary chose the better thing and it will not be taken from her.
Distraction attempts to attach itself to ALL of us.!
Have you ever experience distraction when you try to pray or read your bible? Do you find your mind wandering when you do? This is distraction showing up in hopes of deterring you from your connection with God through His Holy Spirit.
None of us are exempt from distractions. It does not matter who we are.
What distractions are taking the place of your much needed daily time with God in His Word and prayer?
What are some of the things that distracts us and keeps us from hearing from God?
As seen in this text we know busyness is one, too much entertainment, twitter, facebook, messenger, chores, family, too many hours at work, not prioritizing, etc. All of these distractions are just simple ways that the enemy of the mind uses to get our focus off of God.
When we fail to prioritize, distraction takes front seat in our lives, especially where the Gospel is concerned and causes us to put spending time with Jesus at the bottom of the to list.
The results of Martha’s distraction was worry, troubled and unhappy with her sister Mary and possibly Jesus.
Nothing, absolutely nothing, is more important than knowing and listening to Jesus. There is only one main priority in the life of every believer and that is a personal love relationship with God through Christ Jesus.
Distracted! Is it your desire that others participate in it with you?
What’s taking the place of you daily spending time with God in His Word?
Can Jesus say of us that we too have chosen to do “the one thing” that matters the most? Mary kept Jesus in view as the “main thing” in her life.
Sitting at the feet of Jesus may seem so simple, yet it is so powerful and transformative.
Distraction of Devotion? Which have you chosen? If you are not sure, the order in which you run your day will tell you.
What shall we choose to do? Jesus chose to seek the Father everyday early in the mornings.
We are reminded to seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added unto us.
When we seek God first, we are allowing Him to daily impart into us wisdom and revelation that will be needed for that day, guidance, direction and discernment to help us in making the right choices as we travel throughout our day.
When we ALL are tempted to be like Martha, which is more often than not, may we choose the “one thing that is needed” and He is Jesus!
Don’t let the distractions of today destroy the peace and satisfaction that come from sitting, learning and resting at the feet of Jesus.
Distracted by the cares of the world or comforted by the peace of God’s presence?
