Matthew 9:9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s station. And He said to him, “Come Follow Me.” And he rose and followed Him.
In His pursuit for “Disciples” that He could teach and train to be “fishers of men”, Jesus spoke these profound words to Matthew; “follow me”, and he followed Jesus.
“Follow Me” is an invitation to humanity around the world! God is calling workers to His vineyard for truly the harvest is plentiful, but, the laborers are few.
Jesus calls us to follow Him. To make sure of our commitment to the call, Jesus has a question to ask us before we respond with our answer and that question is found in Luke 14:8-If you wanted to build a house, what is the first thing you will do? Won’t you sit down and figure out how much it will cost and if you have enough money to pay for it?
Well, if you are willing to commit to follow Jesus, won’t you sit down and consider the cost of following Him?
There is indeed a price to pay in following Christ! Giving up bad habits and life styles, people who want to remain in the opposite direction from that which God is calling you and the old man in you and all his ways and desires of the flesh is indeed a force to be reckoned with, but, with the Holy Spirit on the inside of us, the inspired Word of God and prayer, we will make it for Jesus promises to never leave nor forsake us, but, to be with us always.
Follow Jesus or follow the world! This is your only option! We all are following something or someone even if we refuse to admit it.
We follow Jesus by our commitment to our love relationship with Him and in our service to him through our service to others, by loving our enemies, those who have persecuted us and said all manner of evil against, praying for others in private and when the opportunity presents in person, being that light in this dark world, show that kindness that you desire to someone else, being a witness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost by telling them of God’s love for them and how He died and shed His blood as proof of His love for them.
We are to be that good Samaritan that helps the poor and needy, that follower of Christ who walk in the fruit of the spirit, showing kindness to those in need and those who have wrong us by forgiving them because Christ forgave us. We are to serve one another, cry and laugh with one another, comfort one another, show love and compassion for others, especially for those that are of the household of faith.
We also follow Christ when we walk in the light of His truth with evidence in our life living and conduct. We are the salt of the earth. We should add flavor to those who encounter us. Where there is hate, we exemplify the love of Christ through our good deeds and God receives the glory.
Following Christ leads to life everlasting with Him and following the ways of the world and the flesh leads to eternal destruction in the lake of fire separated from God.
Remember, Christ is your goal and not man. .
Do you hear the words Jesus spoke to Matthew speaking to your soul today? Is He calling you to follow Him? I have no doubt He is! The question is “have you counted the cost and will it lead you to obey His call”
Who is this Jesus that is calling you to “FOLLOW ME” and I will show you great and mighty things?
This Jesus is God incarnate, Creator , the Triune God, Mediator between God and man, Redeemer, Savior of the world, the Messiah, the Son of God and the One who shed His blood so that you and I can live eternally in heaven with God the Father, for it is only through Him that we live, move and have our being. It is Jesus who sacrificed his life so that you and I can have a personal relationship with God the Father.
Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life!” “Without me, no one can go to the Father.
Following Jesus is making the “sacrifice” to following the path of the Cross. “Whoever does not take up his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” “If anyone who would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”
“COME AND FOLLOW ME”! Believe it or not, but everyone follows something: friends, popularity, family, selfish desires, etc., or God. We can only follow one thing at a time for no man can serve two masters at the same time. God forbid!
Throughout the word of God we are warned by God that there should be no other gods before Him. To truly follow Christ means we do not follow anything else. Jesus said in Luke 9:23, "whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."
If you refuse to heed the call to “come follow Jesus” and your soul is lost, it is nobody fault but your own. We can’t blame, mama, daddy, grandmama, husband, wife, children, other people, etc., and definitely not me. No! we will stand at the judgment seat and give an account as to how we used our days here on earth, be it good or evil.
Whoever follows Jesus, who takes up his or her cross and follows Him, will truly live.
SEEK THE LORD WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND! CALL UPON HIM WHILE HE IS NEAR!
To truly follow Christ means He has become everything to us. He is “FIRST” in our lives and we have no other gods!
