Mark 1:16–20: The Call of Grace Says "Follow Me"

Mark 1:16–20 - 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

In this text, Jesus initiates the call of His first four disciples after the death of John the Baptist.

Jesus takes a stroll beside the Sea of Galilee, where He sees two brothers, Simon and Andrew, who were fishermen casting their nets into the lake. Having gone a little farther, He sees two more brothers, James and John.

As Jesus walked beside the sea, He spoke these profound words to these brothers: “Come, follow Me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” Without hesitation, they dropped their nets and followed Him.

What about you? Do you hear Jesus calling you to serve Him in your service to others? Jesus is making this very same call to each of us today.

He had a great plan for these brothers, and He has one for you and me today as well. Notice here that God not only initiates the call, but He is also the one who uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Most people deeply desire a clear purpose in life, but walking away from what is comfortable and familiar is incredibly difficult. When Jesus called His first followers by the Sea of Galilee, He didn’t give them a complex theological lecture.

Today, God extends that exact same, simple, direct invitation to your heart: “Follow Me.”

Will you follow Jesus as He commands you to?

God Bless!
