John 13:34-35 The Mark Of A Christian Is Love

John 13:34-35 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

From the very beginning of creation, God’s ultimate plan has been to develop a people who reflect His character. What is His character? God is love!

Unfortunately, we live in a world that loves to draw lines, build walls, and stay divided, but Christian love crosses boundaries.

The words that Jesus spoke to His disciples were delivered on the darkest night of His life: the night of His betrayal. Right after kneeling down to wash the dirt off His disciples' feet, Jesus gives them a command.

Think about the weight of that moment: He had just washed the feet of Peter, who would soon deny Him, and Judas, who would soon sell Him out for 30 pieces of silver. Knowing this truth, Jesus modeled the standard before He ever mandated it. "Love one another!" It sounds beautiful, doesn't it? But if we are honest, can we actually do it?

Human love hits a wall the moment someone offends us, drains us, or rubs us the wrong way. Our “LOVE” somehow seems to  run out when this happens to us. This is why Jesus said to them, “As I have loved you.” Christian love stands out because it operates differently.

People of God, when we forgive the unforgivable, bear one another’s burdens, and serve across social divides, we make the invisible Gospel visible to an unloving world.

Jesus says, in vs #35 "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples."

The ultimate proof of discipleship is our behavior. It is our mercy toward one another. That is the exact marker Jesus gave the world to recognize His followers.

Having the love of Christ dwelling richly within us is the most powerful and costly investment we will ever make. It will cost us our pride, our comfort, and our right to hold a grudge. Our love for one another is the only currency that catches the attention of a watching world.

The call from Jesus to all of humanity is to love one another exactly as He has loved us. When we demonstrate this supernatural love, it completely distinguishes believers from the rest of the world, leaving an undeniable witness that we truly belong to Jesus.

Love one another as I have loved you! Say this out loud a few times!

God bless!
