1 Corinthians 11:23-25 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
When Jesus says, "Do this in remembrance of me," He is sending forth a profound invitation to all believers. It is a call to both remembrance and self-examination.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that every time we partake of the “Lord Supper,” we "proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." The Lord Supper gives us a rearview look at the cross and what was done for the saving of our souls. This bread and wine are symbolic of the broken body and shed blood of Jesus Christ. It is the visual, tangible proof of His sacrifice. Partaking of the “Communion” also allows us to look forward to the glory that shall be revealed in us when Christ returns.
Let us be intentional about our approach to this sacred table. The Apostle Paul warns the church against taking it in an unworthy, careless manner because the table is holy.
Before we partake of the bread and the cup, we must pause to examine our hearts, confess our faults, and reset our focus on God’s mercy towards us through Christ Jesus.
Heavenly Father, search our hearts, forgive us our sins, cleanse our hearts and minds, and reset our focus on your boundless mercy towards us in Jesus name. Amen.
