James 1:22 – “Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”
James, the half-brother of Jesus, issues a direct warning to us all. James uses the analogy of a mirror to show that God’s Word isn't just something we listen to, but something we must live out. This challenges us to move from merely being hearers to active doers
The Word of God is our spiritual mirror. Just as a physical mirror reveals flaws, dirt, or areas needing attention that require us to wash or fix them, the spiritual mirror of God’s truth shows us our true spiritual state. When we look into it, it exposes our pride, our unforgiveness, our anxiety, and our speech.
James does not say that listening is bad. In fact, the Word of God declares that "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17, NIV). This means that we absolutely must study the Word of God daily.
However, the danger arises when listening becomes the entire journey. The blessing of the Christian life isn’t found in how much scripture we know; it's found in how much scripture we live out. We are promised that “the person who looks intently into the perfect law of liberty, and does it, will be blessed in their doing” (Jas. 1:25, NIV).
God does not promise to bless us for our knowledge, our intentions, or our church attendance. He promises that the person who acts on the law of liberty will be blessed in their doing.
Ask yourself right now: What is one specific thing God has already told me in His Word that I need to put into practice today? Ponder here for a little while and let us be honest with ourselves. Which describes you?
The mirror of God's Word has done its job today by showing us the truth of who we are and what needs to change. Don’t walk away and forget. Don’t let your faith stop at your ears.
People of God, the choice is ours. Will we walk away and forget, or will we step out into the world this week and live out our faith?
A faith that obeys is a force that changes the world. Let us be not only hearers of God’s word, but doers also.
God bless you all!
