Matthew 7:13-14 The Two Gates Called Wide and Narrow

Matthew 7:13-14 13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. 14 How narrow is the gate and difficult the way that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Think about the last time you used a GPS or map app on your phone. When it gives you route options, what does it usually highlight? It highlights the fastest route, the one with the fewest toll roads, the path of least resistance.

We live in a world that tells us that the best path is always the one that feels easiest, the one with the fewest obstacles, the fastest results, and the biggest crowd.

Thousands of years ago, Jesus stood on a mountainside and gave a spiritual travel advisory that flips our modern love for convenience completely on its head. He basically warned us: if the spiritual path you are walking feels completely effortless, you are likely heading in the wrong direction. Jesus says the exact opposite of what our world teaches! He reminds us that when it comes to eternity, the easiest path is actually the most dangerous one.

The majority of the world is on this road, sliding down a smooth, crowded slope where the culture sets the pace and dictates the values. It feels safe because everyone else is doing it. The popular choice is an easy walk with the crowd. But Jesus pulls back the curtain of popularity to reveal a tragic truth: this effortless highway of least resistance ends in destruction.

The wide gate represents the easy path of least resistance chosen by the crowd, while the narrow gate represents an intentional, decision to follow Jesus. The narrow gate is not a road you stumble onto by accident. This gate represents a deliberate, intentional decision to step away from the crowd. It requires a careful, personal commitment to follow Jesus, even when it means walking in the opposite direction of the crowd.

Today, the invitation stands before us to stop letting the crowd choose our direction. Following Jesus will never be the popular option, and it will never be the path of least resistance. But it is the only path that leads to life everlasting with God the Father.

Will you commit to be one of the dedicated few who drop the excuses, step off the broad highway, and intentionally choose the narrow gate that leads to life everlasting with God in heaven?

I leave you with these parting words: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. Small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (Matt. 7:13-14, NIV).

The popular choice is an easy walk with the crowd. But Jesus pulls back the curtain of popularity to reveal a tragic truth: this effortless highway of least resistance ends in destruction.

Which road are you traveling? Ponder here for a few days.

God bless!
