Matthew 21:12-13 Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who sold and bought in the temple and overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it ‘a den of thieves.

The next day after the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem to the temple and he found people selling doves. Among these merchants were money changers seated at the tables also.

Having seen His Father’s house set up as a market place for financial gain and corruption, instead of a house of prayer and worship, Jesus became very angry and overturned the tables, as He condemned them for making the Lord Holy Temple a den of thieves, as He described it.

Those being condemned were the money changers and merchants who were exploiting poor people by charging excessive prices and profiting from religious rituals.

In calling those in the temple that day “robbers or thieves,” Jesus was also speaking to the religious leaders who allowed God’s holy and sacred place of worship to be used as a den of thieves or robbers.

The people in the temple that day had lost sight of the temple’s true purpose. Jesus’ intervening in the situation reminded them that holiness mattered far more than human plans.

As believers today, we are now God’s temple, and His Spirit dwells within us. “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God, and that you are not your own? 20 You were bought with a price. Therefore, glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1Cor.6”19-20 MEV).

Lord, empower us by your spirit to daily walk in newness of life that you gave us at the point to salvation by your spirit. Guide our thoughts Lord so that your presence may dwell in us and among us. Let our actions Lord bring glory to your name. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen
