Matthew 11:28 - Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest!
Think about the last time you received a real, personal invitation in the mail or a direct text. How did it make you feel? An invitation should make us feel special, wanted, and accepted. In life, we spend a lot of time trying to earn our way into rooms, trying to prove we belong, or waiting for someone to choose us.
God doesn't leave us guessing. He has always been an inviting God. He doesn’t wait for us to get our lives completely cleaned up before He extends His hand. He invites us while we are standing right where we are, even in the mess that we have made of our lives.
In this text, Jesus isn't calling the self-sufficient or the proud. He is calling those who labor. The ones working hard, spinning their wheels, and trying to carry the weight of life in their own strength. He is calling the heavy laden, the crushed, the weary, the anxious, the brokenhearted, and those carrying sins or burdens they were never meant to shoulder alone. He is calling the destitute, the thirsty, and the hungry.
What do we do with this invitation? An invitation sitting on the kitchen counter does us no good if we never open it or RSVP. We have to act on it. The disciples received the invitation, followed Jesus, and spent the rest of their lives extending that same invitation to their families, friends, and neighbors, winning souls to Christ. We have the same choice today.
If you are visiting here, and you are tired today of pretending, tired of striving, and tired of carrying the weight, it’s time to incline our ear to the voice of Jesus calling our names. The invitation is open, personal, and free. It does not cost us a dime! Will you accept the invitation today and trade your heavy burden for His rest?
We all have spent too much time trying to fix our own mess in our own strength. Today is the day to hand over the heavy baggage to Jesus, and allow Him to give us the rest we have not only been searching for, but the “REST” we stand in desperate need of. Jesus has already paid for the invitation, but only you can open the door of rest for your weary soul! Will you surrender to the rest Jesus is offering you today? Or, will you keep drowning in your own strength as you try to create rest your way? Ponder here!
God bless!
